A lot has been done in the local business landscape in the past few years by Google. This includes everything from Google Local to Google+, GYBO, Google My Business, Google Business Photos and now Google Business View. All of these projects were designed with a couple of things in mind – helping the small business owner manage their online presence and user experience.
Google Business View, which is part of Google Maps, is the most recent development and is currently in the process of being re-branded to Street View.
In 2012, Google launched Google Business View, essentially a derivative of StreetView, to explore world landmarks, discover natural wonders, and step inside locations such as museums, arenas, restaurants and small businesses. GBV trains and guides those interested in becoming a certified Trusted Photographer or Agency.
These certified individuals create tours for their small business customers by taking panoramic images inside of the business. The images are then uploaded, edited and published through a set of free online software tools that Google provides.
Published tours then become a part of the Search Engine Result Pages, Google+, and Google Maps. People coming across these tours online can virtually “walk” through and get a sense of the business right from their computer or smartphone, as they are mobile responsive too.
To see an example of this, simply Google search ‘hatch family chocolates’. Notice on the right hand side on the picture it says, ‘See inside’. Clicking on that will take you to Google Maps where you can view the virtual tour that was created by us.
Interestingly enough, Google Trusted Photographers take high-quality still photographs that will be stitched into 360-degree views using the same technology as the Street View Cars.
Along with the re branding of Google Business View to Street View, Trusted Photographers and agencies will be able to publish high quality imagery in less time on the spot through the new Street View mobile app that has yet to be released. This will most likely lead to an increased number and frequency of panoramas being published.
